Targetting the dairy-free market
Milk and other dairy products are the mainstay of the British diet. In fact, although the UK only represents about 20% of the EU population, it consumes a massive 40% of its dairy products! So where does this leave those of us trying to target the dairy-free retail market?
Well, ironically, what this over-consumption has resulted in is an increased prevalence of dairy allergy, lactose intolerance and dairy-related sensitivities amongst the population. Similarly, more and more people are becoming aware of some of the health risks associated with dairy consumption, such as: the high level of saturated fat; its acidic effects on the body; its contamination level; the strain it can place on digestion; its established links to cardiovascular disease, child-onset diabetes, breast and prostate cancer etc.
Taken together, these factors have resulted in an ever-increasing demand for dairy-free alternatives, and this of course extends to dairy-free supplements and health foods.
Dairy-free - a growing market
The reason that so many people are now opting for a dairy-free diet, is that they are often trying to find a solution to an ongoing health problem, symptom or set of symptoms. For example, gut problems such as abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhoea, poor digestion and/or excessive wind. Eczema and sinus congestion, along with excess weight, are also common complaints.
As such, 'dairy-free' is a rapidly expanding market, as is the case with other 'free from' sectors (like gluten-free). In fact:
- it is estimated that as much as 45% of the UK population have a food allergy or intolerance (Allergy UK report, October 2009)
- women, children and ethnic groups are most affected
- 1-2% of adults suffer from an allergy, compared to 5-8% of children (according to the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) and Allergy UK)
- it is estimated that 1% of the population have coeliac disease, but a further 10% follow a gluten-free diet as a lifestyle choice (according to Coeliac UK)
- BNF estimates that 5% of the British white population are lactose-intolerant, with an even higher incidence among the ethnic population
- 1 in 10 consumers avoid certain foods just ‘to be on the safe side’, according to Mintel’s consumer research.
What this data shows us is that there is massive potential for free from foods to capitalise on healthy-eating trends. Aside from the large portion of individuals seeking out dairy-free products for health reasons, offering dairy-free supplements and health foods to consumers also fits with the current trend towards natural healthy eating and greater transparency in terms of ingredients and formulation.
