Google algorithm update - how it affects you

Posted by in Marketing and SEO, Make money online on October 06, 2014 . .

Google have rolled out another update to their search algorithm. Building on recent changes, 'Panda 4.1' aims to identify websites with low quality content more precisely. This will have an impact on all websites.

What does this mean for you?

The result of this could mean small and medium sized sites with high quality content seeing a welcome increase in rankings. Websites with thin or poor quality content (or simply a lack of content entirely) will see a drop in rankings. Google estimate that 3-5% of search queries will be affected by this latest update.

Once again, the emphasis is on quality of content - if your website has high quality, unique, keyword-rich content, that is regularly updated and is relevant to your market, then you are heading in the right direction towards increased traffic and higher search engine rankings.

What can I do to improve my content?

  • Use relevant content that is written by experts. Google use the quality level of an article to determine whether it is authoritative and trustworthy.
  • Avoid duplicate content. It goes without saying that if you are copying content from another site it lowers the trustworthiness of your website, and will likely result in it being penalised.
  • Regularly update your content. It is not as easy as just writing one article - you need to regularly update and add new content, to keep your website relevant. A good rule of thumb is every 1 - 2 weeks.
  • Link within your content to other respected sources. This helps to show that you are providing geniunely helpful information, and also has the benefit of encouraging authoritative backlinks from other website.
  • Encourage your customers to leave reviews. Whether on your product pages, on Facebook, Google Plus or any other channel, having a good reputation is key. These positive social 'signals' can help to let search engines know that your site is popular and respected.
