Importing GB supplements into the EU post Brexit

Can I still order wholesale supplements from the UK post-Brexit?

If you are an EU-based retailer, health practitioner or other type of reseller or entrepreneur, you might be wondering whether you are still able to purchase wholesale supplements from the UK following Brexit.

The simple answer is yes.

There has been much uncertainty and confusion, especially outside of the UK, as to exactly how it would continue cross-border trading with EU countries after Brexit came into effect on the 1st January 2021.

In practical terms, very little has changed (for us, as supplements wholesalers, at least) other than an increase in paperwork and procedure.

While we remain in the transition phase, much of this is in the process of being finalised and standardised for each country and has, inevitably, led to a few delays (not least because the transition phase has also coincided with COVID). But each day the procedures become more streamlined and our packages are getting through.

Trading for almost a quarter of a century, we have a broad customer base across the EU as a whole. We continue to ship there (both in bulk to our trade customers, and as dropship orders directly to their customers) and this will not change.

A bit of extra paperwork

Most of the delays experienced to date have related to customs clearance and/or some courier companies not yet shipping the supplements commodity code. These issues are now resolving.

The majority of the paperwork we are referring to is for us as your suppliers.

If you are placing dropship orders (i.e. for direct dispatch to your customers), there should be little (if any) extra work for you. We add all the export information for the dropship orders.

If you wish to import from the UK, you should, however, obtain an EU Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number if you do not have one already.

EU businesses that wish to import from the UK need to ensure they have an EORI number in order to complete customs formalities.

These numbers are distributed by national authorities and businesses should complete this step as soon as possible. Businesses can hold only one valid EORI number at the same time.

But cheaper imports

One very important advantage of Brexit for our EU customers (and perhaps not yet on their radar) is that, as of the 1st January 2021, there is 0% VAT for all orders shipped to the EU from the UK. This makes the products 20% cheaper for exports - a great boost for sales to the EU!

What this means in practice is that quality, UK-made supplements become more affordable and accessible to the EU market.

Will my company have to pay import duties on the supplements I import from the UK?

No, the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement provides for zero tariffs and zero quotas on all trade in goods originating in the EU or the UK.
